Job Title: ED Nurse
Reports to: Head Nurse, Nurse Coordinator
Supervises: Nurse Assistants, Cleaners

Job Location: Kyaka II Refugee Settlement
Duration: December 1, 2018 to September 24, 2019

Position Summary: Under general supervision, they deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation of the patient.

ED Nurses will collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes and effectively interact with the patient and significant others while maintaining the standard of professional nursing.

Job description: In an emergency situation, nurses often treat patients who have life-threatening conditions. Their primary job functions are to resuscitate or stabilize patients and refer them to the appropriate medical departments.

A nurse works as part of a team with physicians, other nurses and healthcare professionals to provide care, monitor health conditions, plan long-term care needs, administer medicine, use medical equipment, perform minor medical operations, and advise patients and their families on illness, care and continued care after a hospital stay.

For the CEMS the ED Nurse needs to be comfortable with rapid assessments of each patient, to prioritize care, and work to stabilize the patient, to treat underlying conditions, and to discharge the patient once they are stabilized.

ED Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients applying evidence-based clinical protocols. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities and duties to be carried out on a daily basis of ED Nurses include (but are not limited to):

1. Collect current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans;

2. Performing triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements;

3. Managing basic life support needs and stabilizing patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocols;

4. Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology;

5. Records patients’ current vital signs;

6. Works directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments;

7. Works side by side with other health professionals and with international medical volunteers as a team;

8. Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments; provides IV therapy;

9. Cleans and bandages wounds and provides basic, bedside care;

10. Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients;

11. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations;

12. Reports any suspected abuse to management;

13. Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs;

14. Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by the physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment;

15. Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner;

16. Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms;

17. Liaise arrangements when a patient needs a referral or for those who come with a referral from a different health organization, directing them to the right department;

18. Ensure that the Emergency Department is appropriately stocked;

19. Supervises nurse assistants and cleaners;

20. Supervises nursing students;

21. Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations;

22. Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements maintaining;

23. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, etc;

24. Work in another area of the CEMS differently than ED, when asked.

Because of the fast-paced and variable environment of emergency rooms, ED Nurses must possess good stress coping skills and be able to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds. They must be able to work accurately around frequent interruptions. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases.

Qualifications:
-Degree in Nursing
-Minimum 3 years of experience
-Ability to work in a rotating shift of 8 hours
-Flexibility to work 16 hours shift when needed
-Availability to work 24 hours shifts;
-Fluent in English
-Swahili and French
-Ability to communicate and interact well with people from different educational, linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds
-Proficiency in handling basic computer programs used in hospital management and basic computer skills in Word and Excel.
